If any place reflects the personality of its owner, it’s Sweetbriar. Samuel Breck was quite the renaissance man. Interested in horticulture, civic affairs, history, government, literature and the arts, he was educated abroad and developed very European tastes.
Perched atop a sloping hillside, his very large, very elegant neoclassical Sweetbriar offered sweeping views of the river. Inside, it features large Italianate windows, a double parlor furnished in the Etruscan style and the workmanship of some of Philadelphia’s finest furniture makers.
