Outsider Tip
Azalea Lane is in full bloom in May, while the rare Franklinia trees flower in July and August. And youngsters delight in the Children’s Garden, designed by and for kids. They’ll marvel at the unique “Magic Tree," a European weeping beech.
The Pinetum and Hillside Garden that greets visitors to Welkinweir previews the natural beauty of this richly diverse, secluded stream valley. Enjoy the majestic views of the Chester County countryside from the terrace of the former Rodenbaugh estate, now the headquarters of the Green Valleys Association.
Investigate the barn ruins on the way to the ponds, which are a focal point of this 162-acre refuge and environmental education center. Pick up one of the trails that wind through the forest past the woodland garden and the waterfall. Walk softly and carry binoculars, the better to see all the wildlife that inhabits this unspoiled watershed. Hikers can connect to the nearby Horseshoe Trail for extended walking adventures.
COME PREPARED
Open daily year round, although hours vary according to season. Pets must be leashed.
DON'T MISS
The Mother's Day Tea in May usually sells out early, and the Holiday Open House, held on the second Saturday in December, is also popular.
