The daughter of wealth and privilege, Katharine Drexel renounced everything and dedicated herself to serving the poor. She founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who worked with Black and Native American peoples establishing schools and missions. The SBS Motherhouse, where the shrine is located, is reminiscent of a European monastery and includes a chapel and the shrine. St. Katharine’s childhood desk, wheelchair and other artifacts are on display. Canonized in 2000, St. Katharine is entombed in the shrine.
