October is National GLBT History Month and a number of events and festivities are painting Philadelphia in rainbows.
Be sure to celebrate National Coming Out Day — coined Outfest by Philadelphians — which attracts more than 20,000 people to the area surrounding 13th and Pine Streets. The annual block party has grown in size and popularity to become one of the largest GLBT annual events in the world.
New to Philadelphia this year is the Philadelphia Freedom Weekend, which runs from October 5 through 7 and is hosted by Mariah Hanson and Club Skirts of The Dinah. The weekend includes a welcome celebration at Sisters, a Pure Party Girl bash at Pure and the Outfest street fair, before returning to Sisters for the closing night soirée.
And to celebrate the 31 days of GLBT History Month, the Equality Forum will honor 31 Icons who have achieved success within their respective fields, were national heroes or advanced the GLBT civil rights movement. The icons will be represented in a 30-second biographical video that will be broadcast daily from their Web site. So be sure to check out the Equality Forum Web site in October!
