Hispanic: History in Philadelphia
Nuestra Historia, Tu Historia (Our History, Your History)
The history of our nation is a mosaic of the diverse threads tying America’s founding story to the contributions of Spanish speaking people as early as the 1700s. From colonial life through the revolutionary war to post World War II, descendants of the original Spanish explorers and settlers tell a story that helped to enrich and shape the direction of the new democracy.
The development of Philadelphia’s multi-faceted Latino/Hispanic population is described by The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in its online publication, “Latino Philadelphia: Our Journeys, Our Communities."
