Folk Details
Folklorists and music experts have a tough time defining just what "folk music" is, but they agree that Philadelphia has plenty of it. In fact, Philadelphia and its surrounding area have one of the most lively folk music scenes in the nation. Only Boston comes close.
Philadelphia is a town that throbs with folk music activity. We enjoy vibrant performances in large concert halls like
Kimmel Center of the Performing Arts
and smaller ones like
The Keswick
in Glenside or the
TLA
on South Street. You can get up close and personal with popular artists who play intimate clubs like
The Tin Angel
in Old City.
During warm weather, you can grab your blanket and head for the grassy slopes of our many summer festivals. These events play to thousand of music fans each spring and summer.
We have an abundance of folk music genres to choose from, and they offer us an eclectic mix of folksongs and ballads, blues and bluegrass, country tunes, Celtic dances, traditional roots music and contemporary song from all over the world.
