NORTHWEST PHILLY NEIGHBORHOODS HIGHLIGHTED IN PHILLY TOURISM CAMPAIGN
GPTMC Promotes Local Neighborhoods On uwishunu Blog, In Video And In Tourism Advertising

PHILADELPHIA, September 12, 2007 - Local favorites in Chestnut Hill, East Falls, Manayunk and Northwest Philly are highlighted in uwishunu™ (as in “you wish you knew”), a tourism campaign created by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC), funded by the City of Philadelphia and supported by City Councilpersons Carol Ann Campbell, Marian Tasco, Donna Reed Miller and their colleagues to show off the city from the inside out. On the insider blog uwishunu.com, locals share under-the-radar scoop on cool things to do in their favorite neighborhoods. Favorites featured on the blog then reappear in uwishunu’s advertising. Additionally, the latest episode of uwishunu’s popular Web TV series features a tour of Manayunk and Roxborough.

A mini-magazine inserted in alternative weeklies in New York, Baltimore, Boston, Providence and Washington D.C. this summer highlights (among others) the uwishunu.com blog post about McNally’s Tavern’s famed sandwich, the Schmitter. These mini-magazines feature authentic Philly bloggers with their favorite insider revelations, as well as Philly artists’ renditions of blog post subjects from uwishunu.com.

Web TV:
In uwishunu’s first-ever Web TV series, engaged couple Audrey and Mark pull off their most affordable date yet, heading out to Manayunk and Roxborough in search of the best cheese pizza money can buy (Alex’s Pizza) and a hike through the nation’s largest park within city boundaries (Wissahickon Valley Park). They also hit up the Salvation Army Thrift Store for duds and Dairy Land for sweet treats. The Web TV episodes air weekly on philebrity.tv and uwishunu.com.

Here’s what Northwest Philadelphia residents and visitors have written about:

Chestnut Hill:
  • In A Sandwich That’s Heart-Stoppingly Good, Andi raves about the Schmitter at McNally’s Tavern, a sandwich “so good you’ll be smiling all the way to your cardiac bypass.”
  • In There IS Such a Thing as a Free Lunch!, blogger Sam delights in upper Germantown Avenue’s cobblestone streets, antiques stores and the “bustling stalls, fresh produce and…free samples” at the Chestnut Hill Farmer’s Market.

East Falls:
  • In Have a Seat at the Set Table, Gina Allison praises East Falls, a neighborhood with “perfect parts charm and big-city access,” and The Set Table, a charming café with its own coffee line.
  • In Girl, You’ve Earned a Girls’ Night Out, Leha blogs about Girlfriends, a great place “for the perfect girl’s night out” where women can bond with all the comforts of home, but “without the worry of cooking, cleaning or any kind of preparing.”

Manayunk:
  • Michael posts about Outside at the Manayunk Brewery, where guests sit over the banks of the Schuylkill River, enjoy dishes from a vast menu and sample some of the 10 brews made on the premises.
  • Manayunk Midnight Madness features the infamous Midnight Downhill race that takes place the night before the actual Philadelphia International Championship. During the extremely unofficial event, riders on “scooters, big wheels, and many other homemade devices scream down this very steep street to cheers of thousands.”
  • In Pretend You’re an Interior Designer for a Day, blogger Caroline alerts readers to the annual post-Thanksgiving sale at Galbraith & Paul Lighting + Textiles studio.

Northwest Philly:

  • In If You Like Nature, Here’s Heaven, blogger Sam Slaughter writes about Morris Arboretum, “the proverbial Chocolate Factory for nature-lovers.” Sam also tells of a Philly Cheesesteak Battle: Chubby’s vs. D’Allesandro’s, “northwest Philly’s answer to the cheesesteak hegemony of their more famous southside cousins.”
