PHILADELPHIA, November 20, 2007 - Gay nightlife in Philadelphia isn’t all about the men. Lesbian travelers have a vibrant scene all their own with Sisters Nightclub, a seven-days-a-week women’s bar, and themed parties at an array of venues each week. There’s a place in Philadelphia for all kinds of lesbians, from the artist to the activist to the party girl. Here’s a look:

Dance Venues:
  • Sisters Nightclub – Philadelphia’s exclusive lesbian nightclub draws women of all ages for food, drinks, dancing and entertainment. The two-story nightclub features two bars, a restaurant, lower-level pool room and popular $10 all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch buffet.   • Shampoo – Shaft Fridays at Shampoo sizzle for both men and women. The converted warehouse has plenty of dance space and an intimate “Latin Lounge” downstairs, where resident D.J. Maria V. spins salsa-infused tunes. 417 N. 8th Street, (215) 922-7500, www.shampooonline.com
  • Tavern on Camac (TOC) – Women who love Broadway will have plenty to sing about at this piano bar nestled on one of Philadelphia’s most charming streets. TOC features fine dining downstairs and a lively second-floor nightclub, Ascend Lounge, where guys and gals get their groove on during karaoke and weekend dance parties. 243 S.   • Woody’s – Woody’s may be Philadelphia’s most famous nightclub for gay men, but it’s also a welcoming spot for lesbians. The club features a new menu, as well as two floors for socializing and dancing. 202 S. 13th Street, (215) 545-1893, www.woodysbar.com

  • L’Etage – Upstairs from French creperie Beau Monde is a Parisian-inspired nightclub featuring underground drag, burlesque and performance acts from Philly and New York. Regulars include Murray Hill and Martha Grahamcracker. 624 S. 6th Street, (215) 592-0656, www.creperie-beaumonde.com
  • Lolita – Lesbian chef Marcie Turney’s Mexican fusion bistro is just footsteps away from the city’s gay clubs. Patrons can bring their own tequila for flavorful margaritas mixed right at the table. 106 S. 13th Street, (215) 546-7100, www.lolitabyob.com
  • The Raven – Cool off in the pool during summer or warm up with special events throughout the year, like SnowBabes, a winter dance party at this gay and lesbian resort in New Hope. 385 West Bridge Street, New Hope, (215) 862-2081, www.theravenresort.com

Monthly and Circuit Parties:
  • Pure Party Girl – Women rule Pure, a gay after-hours club, on the first Saturday of every month.   • Fuse – This monthly party of live music, DJs and performance art attracts a colorful and young lesbian, transvestite and bisexual crowd every third Saturday of the month at XO Lounge. 1439 South Street, (215) 735-7351, www.xoloungenightclub.com, www.thefusebox.net
  • Dumpsta Players – This gay-friendly variety show keeps the crowd roaring every third Wednesday of every other month at Bob and Barbara’s Lounge, a watering hole also famous for its weekly Thursday night drag show. 1418 Rodman Street, (215) 545-4511
  • Sugar Town – Lady rockers, drag kings and DJs gather at Tritone the last Saturday of every month for a night of musical entertainment. Favorite lesbian acts on the performance roster include Bitch and the Liberty City Kings. 1508 South Street, (215) 545-0475, www.tritonebar.com
  • Ladies Rock – The women’s folk music scene lands in Manayunk the third Sunday of every month for a concert hosted for women at the Grape Street Pub. The evening has attracted favorite lesbian acts Elaysha, Regina Sayles and Virago. 4100 Main Street, (215) 487-1226, www.ladies2000.com
  • Peek-a-Boo Revue – This neo-burlesque troupe of tattooed and pierced vixens blends comic farce and sex appeal at clubs all over town for the 21-and-older set. 2008 schedule to be determined. www.peekaboorevue.com
  • Emerge – The ladies’ counterpart to Blue Ball, Philly’s own national circuit party for boys, is the city’s largest lesbian event of the year (May 2). It takes place during Equality Forum in spring. Venue to be determined. www.blueballwomen.com
