H & J McNally's Tavern Details
One of the friendliest bars in all of Philadelphia, McNally’s Tavern is a hidden gem located right in the middle of historic Chestnut Hill. We say “hidden” because it doesn’t really have a sign — or a visible one at least — until you’re right in front of the door. Keep your eye out for a white English Tudor-style rowhome with a large green front door, which on warmer days will be opened invitingly toward the avenue.
McNally’s is not, however, so hidden among locals, who have been enjoying the establishment for more than 80 years. Opened in 1921 as a luncheonette by Rose McNally, the tavern is now operated by Rose’s great-granddaughters Ann and Meg.
It’s a perfect place to stop by for a casual meal, watch a game and enjoy the jovial attitude. And McNally’s is refreshingly smoke-free (since 1998), which makes it a great spot to go if you have the family in tow.
The Schmitter®
McNally’s, of course, is famous for its signature sandwich, the Schmitter®, which is a variation of Philadelphia’s famous cheesesteak sandwich. The Schmitter® includes the traditional steak, onions and melted cheese but adds grilled salami, tomatoes and a special sauce and comes on a Kaiser roll instead of a long hoagie roll. While the combination might sound strange, it’s famous for a reason — it’s frighteningly delicious.
